24 | JOHN

HE’D BEEN IN LEANNA’S cell for too long.

Dejection coiled around his veins. It was only a matter of time before the guards grew suspicious of the security systems John disabled. The only reason they hadn't yet was because they were concentrating on something else. He just didn’t know what.

John stole a quick glance upon arriving but needed to leave before they noticed. It seemed serious, from the way the armed men enclosed around the Chief of Police in front of a surface scattered with detailed scale drawings. No one caught him slipping through the entrance.

He had quickly kept on route through several hallways. Sneaking brief looks through the dirty windows of every room, his eyes searched for a specific brunette.

John had been growing restless by the time he surveyed the third hallway when something caught his attention.

One room, heavily guarded with radars, scanners, and constant surveillance at the end of the hallway.

It was genius, really, to cage her in the most hidden chamber, where no one without access would’ve been capable of locating it.

Too bad they hadn't seen him coming.

He hid inside a storage closet and snuck peeks through the gap until a guard approached the men safeguarding Leanna's room and ushered them away with urgency. The men had taken hesitant glances through the window, then stifled a laugh, which only fed John's curiosity. What the hell’s so funny?

Once the coast had been clear, John avoided the security systems stationed every five feet, having nailed down their positions during his time in the closet. His fingers had fumbled with the door's handle, but it immediately clicked open, still unlocked from the guard's earlier scan.

He’d hopped in the room and shut the door soundlessly, scrambling toward the monitors situated at the far end. The screens replayed footage from the security systems, including a short clip of him sneaking in. Damn it.

Scanning the table, John had tucked the cloth of his shirt beneath his fingertips to avoid any prints and deleted the footage in a few clicks. When the system required authorization for the memory to be erased, he spotted a guard's identification card and scanned it in haste. The man was coloured black from head to toe in the portrait, and the only thing John distinguished were his round eyes—green ones, at that.

John knew the guards would return soon, so he quickly went to Leanna. Using the same sentinel's card, he’d unlocked the jail cell.

Thanks, green eyes.

Since then, he’d almost forgotten about the erased footage until thunderous footsteps rushed toward the door.

This time, he knew it was for him.

Leanna glanced up from his chest. “What did you do?”

He was already on his feet when the last word of her question was spoken. It was a simple question but one he didn't have a simple answer to.

“A lot, but I'm guessing they're coming to find the footage I deleted. Also, a guard's card is in my pocket.”

“What?”

He withdrew the card from his pocket and sighed. “It was the only way I could see you.
